Katrina Responders
IN SUPPORT OF…
It is my theory that most researchers, scholars, journalists, investigators proceeded with the assumption that there were no shining lights of duty, heroism, professionalism, etc.; that it was all about race and failure.
Rutgers Law School Professor David Trout graciously said the following in a letter of support for my research project. “As a writer and researcher, I have some experience with the enormity of your task. The book I edited on Katrina, After the Storm: Black Intellectuals Explore the Meaning of Hurricane Katrina, was released on the anniversary of the deluge. At the time, much was not known about many of the important details. As the years have passed, many accounts of the disaster have assumed certain facts. However, your work demonstrates that many core assumptions of the disaster were not understood and remain unknown to many.”
The Contraflow Project is determined to bring to the light the many many stories of valor during that fateful first week of Katrina, and to lobby for a permanent commemorative marker-of-sorts to be built and dedicated in New Orleans to ALL Katrina responders.
